How to use it

  1. Choose a photo. The tool lists the metadata it finds, with location data highlighted.

  2. Select "Remove metadata and download".

  3. Share the cleaned copy. Your original file is not changed.

About this tool

Most phones and cameras save EXIF metadata in each photo: device make and model, lens, exposure settings, the date and time, and, if location services were on, the GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. Editing software can add XMP and IPTC blocks with names, copyright notes and editing history.

Many social networks strip this data when you post, but email attachments, file-sharing links, chat apps sending "as file", and website uploads often keep it. Before sharing photos of your home, children or workplace, check them.

For JPEG and PNG files, this tool removes metadata losslessly: it deletes the metadata blocks without re-compressing the image, so quality is exactly the same. Colour profiles are kept so colours do not shift. If the photo relies on an EXIF rotation flag, the tool rotates the pixels instead so the photo still appears the right way up. WebP files are re-encoded.

Good to know

  • JPEG, PNG and WebP only. RAW and HEIC files are not supported.
  • Reads the most common EXIF fields; other proprietary maker notes are removed but not listed.
  • Rotated JPEGs and all WebP files are re-encoded at high quality (95) instead of losslessly.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing metadata reduce image quality?

For most JPEG and PNG files, no. Only the metadata blocks are deleted and the image data is copied unchanged. Photos that need rotation, and WebP files, are re-saved at very high quality.

Do social media sites remove location data?

Major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and X generally strip it from public images, but practices change. Email, cloud links and messaging apps sending original files usually keep it. Clean the photo yourself to be sure.

How do I stop my phone adding location to photos?

On iPhone: Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Camera › Never. On Android: open the Camera app settings and turn off location tags (wording varies by maker).
