About this tool

Optical character recognition (OCR) finds letters in a picture and turns them into real text. This tool uses Tesseract, the open-source OCR engine originally developed at HP and later maintained with Google's support, compiled to run inside your browser. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the engine and language data (about 4–6 MB) from this site; after that it starts quickly.

For the best results, use a sharp, well-lit image with the text straight and filling most of the frame. Printed text works far better than handwriting. Screenshots usually give near-perfect results. To read a scanned PDF, convert its pages to images first with PDF to JPG.

Good to know

  • Handwriting, decorative fonts, very small text and blurry photos give poor results.
  • Tables and multi-column layouts come out as plain lines of text.
  • English and Arabic only for now.
  • Always proofread: OCR can confuse similar characters such as 0 and O.

Can it read handwriting?
