About this tool

A data URI puts the image's bytes inside the text of your page, so the browser does not need a separate request. That helps for tiny icons and for HTML emails, where external images are often blocked. Base64 makes data about 33% larger and cannot be cached separately, so for anything over a few kilobytes a normal image file is faster.

Good to know

  • Images up to 10 MB.
  • Decoding recognises common image formats only.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use Base64 images?

For very small icons, single-file HTML documents and some email templates. Avoid it for photos: they become larger and slower.

How do I show a Base64 image in HTML?

Use it as the src: <img src="data:image/png;base64,..." alt="">. Choose the HTML output to get this ready-made.

Is the image uploaded?

No. Encoding and decoding happen in your browser.
